For my Photographing the City of London class, every Tuesday we adventure to a different part of the city to photograph, chat, and have a cup of tea. My module teacher is the jolliest, most personable and cutest man alive, Andy, and he loves to just experience life and have us along for the ride, pretty cool I must say. It makes class so much more enjoyable. Today we went to the Victoria and Albert Museum (which is really cool) and it is known for its unique displays and really yummy café. Andy usually buys us hot chocolate or tea every time we have class outside the classroom (don't you just love him already??) but today he said that we were on our own and to try the scones! Not one to pass up food, I decided to venture out and try a scone with jam and clotted cream. So good! I washed it down with a Mocha but the scone was savory and the jam was delightful! I feel so proper.
My milkshake craving was back with a vengeance and I found the perfect cure: Shake Shack. Apparently it's big back in the states and a tourist trap here but honestly, I completely understand why. Big on it's shakes and burgers, Shake Shack has perfected the trifecta: burger, shakes, and fries. I even got cheesy fries. My mouth is watering just thinking about how crunchy and gooey they were. Yum! I got a black and white shake, cheesy fries, and a shackburger and it was delicioso! I'm sure there will be many more trips to get more cheesy fries but I can't say enough good things about this place. My stomach is content with its food baby and my feet are propped up on my bed so you could say that I am all sorts of satisfied right now. Me and Emil(y)(ee)'s decided to treat ourselves to a feast because we're princesses and deserve the best but especially since the boys Emily and I live with kept us up until 3 am wrestling and shit but now that's a thing of the past and all I can think of is my really satisfying lunch. More food finds to come! I'll admit, I have quite the sweet tooth and nothing beats fresh out of the oven cookies that are gooey and warm in the center, which is why Ben's Cookies is so great. The lack of cookie dough in this country is a travesty but luckily Ben's Cookies are delicious, chocolately, and well-priced! I got a dark chocolate cookie and it was all sorts of wonderful. They offer more things such as hot chocolate, milkshakes (ooh), and I think a couple other things, but they are known for their cookies and now I know why! You can find them all over the city and I plan on curing my sweet tooth aches with another cookie in the future for sure. If you're friends with me here, you probably have heard me talking non-stop about how bad I want a Belgium waffle with Nutella on it. And I do mean non-stop. I pass waffle stands on every single street in London and wonder how I have gone a month without drunkenly racing to the stand to gorge myself. (Sorry Mom, I do this sober too) Basically all I do is dream about food, eating food, what food I'm going to eat next and so on, but on Sunday when Margaret, Whitney and I power- walked to the Portobello Market in Notting Hill, I stumbled upon waffle utopia, and it was a beautiful sight to see. Plain waffles, waffles with nutella, waffles adorned with fruit, they had it all. I got a hot-off the buttered-oven Belgium waffle covered in dark chocolate with whip cream and strawberries. Pretty much I went to heaven and back in the form of a waffle. Look how happy I look!
So if you want to save a few bucks and skip Chiquito but don't feel quite up to Chiptole, Tortilla is the perfect in between restaurant. The menu is brief and extremely inexpensive which makes it a great find for people like me. I got the dos tacos while my roommates gorged themselves on burritos and margaritas. If you're feeling spicy and are craving some Mexican, definitely give Tortilla a try.
